Director/Producer/Writer/Development

Francine Strickwerda is an award-winning director, writer and producer of documentary films and Web sites, and owner of Flock This Way Films. She co-directed and produced the feature film Oil & Water for PBS, as well as Busting Out, a feature documentary about the history and politics of America's obsession with the female breast, which aired on Showtime. Her latest film, Ultimate Citizens, is about an Iranian American grade school counselor and ultra athlete who uses Ultimate Frisbee to help immigrant kids. Francine's work has been funded by the MacArthur Foundation, Independent Television Service (ITVS), and many others. She produced and executive edited national PBS Web sites including Don't Buy It, Videogame Revolution and Exploring Space, and was a senior producer at HealthTalk.com. She's a principal and executive producer at Hullabaloo, a Seattle commercial production company, and she has created videos for clients including the United Nations, Fortune 500 companies and the Seattle Fire Department. Francine began her career as a newspaper reporter, and she has a degree in journalism from Washington State University.

Director/Producer/Writer/Camera

Laurel Spellman Smith is a two-time regional Emmy Award-winning producer of national and local programs for PBS including The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and the documentary Faith & Fear: The Children of Krishna. She became an independent producer in 2003 and in addition to Oil & Water she co-directed and produced the women's health documentary Busting Out, which aired on Showtime and the Iraq War documentary The Corporal's Diary, seen on PBS stations, Al Jazeera English and Link TV. She is also a fan of other people’s films and is an annual juror for the News and Documentary Emmy Awards. Laurel grew up in Los Angeles and Kauai before making a home in Seattle with her husband and cat. She graduated from The Evergreen State College, where she studied film and cultural anthropology, pursuing her interest in the latter by traveling to over 100 countries. When not on the road or in the edit room, she manages a vacation rental house on a remote island in The Bahamas, and she is president of Seattle's Dress for Success, a nonprofit empowering women to achieve economic independence through a network of support, development tools, and professional attire.

Editor and Post Supervisor

Tracy Dethlefs is the owner and creative director of Hullabaloo, a creative communication company in Seattle.  Over the past 15 years, he has edited television series for PBS, MTV, and VH-1 and has edited and post produced documentaries that have aired on PBS, BBC, CBC, the History Channel, and numerous other international channels. Tracy was the supervising editor on the PBS documentaries The Secret Files of the Inquisition, Exploring Space: The Quest For Life, and Violin Masters: Two Gentlemen of Cremona. He is currently editing documentary specials for National Geographic and Discovery Science channels.  Tracy’s corporate clients include Microsoft, Amazon, Starbucks and Nordstrom.

Cinematographer

Diana Wilmar has worked around the world for every major US television network, including ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS. She has also worked as a principal photographer with CNN’s Environment Unit. Diana has won five Emmy awards and a Silver Medal from the New York Film Festival for her work in news, documentaries and features. Special assignments have taken her to the Seoul Olympics, the civil war in El Salvador, the earthquake in San Francisco as well as documentaries in Russia, Mexico and Peru. Recent work includes a documentary on global warming for NY Times/Discovery and a series on National Parks for Animal Planet.

Composer

Erik Aho is a Los Angeles-based composer who has written music for The Bachelor (ABC), The Amazing Race (CBS) and The Miracle Workers (ABC). He has orchestrated and produced music forThe Family Guy (Fox) and American Dad (Fox). He composed the original music score for the feature documentary Busting Out, (Showtime) and continues to compose music for independent films, as well as for video games. Aho believes deeply that if every image contains an entire story, it also contains music. One just needs to look in order to hear it.
